internal fixation Surgical procedure placing plates/pins directly into the bone to hold the broken pieces in place
juvenile rheumatoid arthritis Autoimmune disorder, 16 years and younger, stiffness, pain, joint swelling. Typically does not last into adulthood.
kyphosis excessive outward curvature of the spine, causing hunching of the back.
laminectomy Surgical removal of posterior portion of a vertebra
lordosis Increase in forward curvature of lumbar spine, swayback
lumbago Pain of the lumbar region of the spine
malleolus rounded bony projection on the tibia and fibula on the sides of each ankle joint
manubrium forms the upper portion of the sternum
metacarpals pertaining to the bones of the hand
metatarsals pertaining to the bones of the feet
myeloma Cancer occurring in blood-making cells found in red bone marrow
open fracture Bone is broken; open wound in the skin

osteoarthritis Characterized by wearing away of articular cartilage within joints

osteopenia Thinner-than-average bone density, can turn into osteoporosis
osteoporosis Marked loss of bone density with increase in bone porosity, due to aging
osteoporotic hip fracture Broken hip due to osteoporosis
osteorrhaphy Surgical suturing of bones
Paget's disease Chronic disease causing abnormal breakdown of bone usually in pelvis, skull, spine, and legs followed by abnormal bone formation
pathologic fracture Due to weakened bone; not due to trauma
percutaneous vertebroplasty Injection of bone cement to stabilize compression fractures within spinal column
periostitis Inflammation of periosteum
podiatrist Specializes in diagnosing/treating disorders of the foot
polymyalgia rheumatica Inflammatory disorder of muscles and joints
prosthesis Substitute for a diseased or missing body part
rheumatoid arthritis Chronic autoimmune disorder attacking joints and other organs, joint inflammation
rickets Defective bone growth in children due to lack of vitamin D
scoliosis Abnormal lateral curvature of the spine
spina bifida Congenital defect, spinal canal fails to close completely around the spinal cord
spiral fracture Fracture due to a twisting motion
spondylolisthesis Forward slipping movement of body of one of lower lumbar vertebrae or sacrum
spondylosis Degenerative disorder causing loss of normal spinal structure and function
subluxation Partial displacement of a bone from its joint
synovectomy Surgical removal of synovial membrane from a joint
vertebrae backbone
