Frontal Forms forehead
Parjetal Forms superior and lateral walls of cranium
Sagittal Suture Where the two parietals meet
Coronal Suture Where the parietal bones meet the frontal
Temporal Contains important bone markings (ex. styloid process)
Squamous suture Connects the temporal and parietal bones
Occipital Forms base and back wall of skull
Lambdoid Suture Joins the parietal bones in the occipital
Foramen Magnum Opening which surrounds lower part of brain and allows spinal cord to connect
Occipital Condyles Rest on the atlas
Sphenoid bone Butterfly shaped and spans the entire width of the cranial cavity
Sella Turcia Small depression in the middle of the cranial cavity
Foramen ovale Allows the nerve responsible for chewing to pass
Optic Canal Opening which forms the eye orbit
Superior Orbital Fissure Nerves controlling eye movement
Sphenoidal Sinuses Paranasal sinuses
Ethmoid Bone Forms the rood of the nasal cavity and walls of the orbits
Crista galli Projection where the outermost covering of the brain attaches
Cribriform plates Holes on either side of the ethmoid bone
Superior Nasal Conchae Forms walls of the nasal cavity
Middle Nasal Conachae Forms walls of the nasal cavity (2)
Maxillae Form the upper jaw
Alveolar process Where the teeth lie
Palatine Processes Extensions that form anterior hard palate of mouth
Paranasal Sinuses Amplify the sounds we make
Palatine Bones Form the posterior of the hard palate
Clef Palate Occurs when the hard palate doesn't fuse
Zygomatic Bones Cheekbones
Lacrimal Bones Form walls of orbit
Nasal Bones form the upper bridge of the nose
Vomer Bone forms septum
Inferior Nasal Conchae thin curved bones off walls of nasal cavity
Mandible Lower jaw, forms the chin
Hyoid Bone Doesn't articulate with any other bones, horse-shoe shaped with two horns that's a moveable base for the tongue
