Epithelial and Connective tissues

TermDefinition
Basement membrane A layer of nonliving material that anchors epithelial tissue to underlying connective tissue.
Squamous Flat or platelike. Squished
Cuboidal Cube shaped cells.
Columnar Elongated cells
Simple layer of thin flattened cells.
Stratified Arranged in layers.
Microvilli Cylindrical process that extends from some epithelial cells membranes and increases the membrane surface area.
Goblet cell A epithelial cell that is specialized to secrete mucus.
Cilia Microscopic, hairlike processes on the exposed surfaces of certain epithelial cells.
Keratin Protein in epidermis, hair, and nails.
Exocrine glands A gland that secretes its products into a duct or onto a body surface
Endocrine glands A gland that secretes hormones directly into the blood or body fluids.
wandering cells cells that move to appear temporarily in tissues; usually in response to an injury of infection
Macrophages A large phagocytic cell.
Matrix The intercellular substance of connective tissue,
Mast cells A cell to which antibodies, formed in response to allergens, attach, bursting the cell and releasing allergy mediators, which cause symptoms.
Chondrocytes A cartilage cell
Osteocytes A mature bone cell
Osteon A cylinder-shaped unit containing bone cells that surround a central canal.
Synovial membrane membrane that forms the inner lining of the capsule of a freely movable joint.
Serous membranes Membrane that lines a cavity without an opening to the outside of the body.
