Epithelial and Connective tissues
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Basement membrane | A layer of nonliving material that anchors epithelial tissue to underlying connective tissue. |
Squamous | Flat or platelike. Squished |
Cuboidal | Cube shaped cells. |
Columnar | Elongated cells |
Simple | layer of thin flattened cells. |
Stratified | Arranged in layers. |
Microvilli | Cylindrical process that extends from some epithelial cells membranes and increases the membrane surface area. |
Goblet cell | A epithelial cell that is specialized to secrete mucus. |
Cilia | Microscopic, hairlike processes on the exposed surfaces of certain epithelial cells. |
Keratin | Protein in epidermis, hair, and nails. |
Exocrine glands | A gland that secretes its products into a duct or onto a body surface |
Endocrine glands | A gland that secretes hormones directly into the blood or body fluids. |
wandering cells | cells that move to appear temporarily in tissues; usually in response to an injury of infection |
Macrophages | A large phagocytic cell. |
Matrix | The intercellular substance of connective tissue, |
Mast cells | A cell to which antibodies, formed in response to allergens, attach, bursting the cell and releasing allergy mediators, which cause symptoms. |
Chondrocytes | A cartilage cell |
Osteocytes | A mature bone cell |
Osteon | A cylinder-shaped unit containing bone cells that surround a central canal. |
Synovial membrane | membrane that forms the inner lining of the capsule of a freely movable joint. |
Serous membranes | Membrane that lines a cavity without an opening to the outside of the body. |
Mucous Membranes | Mucosa |
