| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Superior Rectus | One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; elevates the eye |
| Inferior Rectus | One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; depresses the eye |
| Medial Rectus | One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; adducts the eye |
| Lateral Rectus | One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; abducts |
| Inferior Oblique | One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; extorts, elevates, and abducts the eyes. |
| Superior Oblique | One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; rotates, depresses, and abducts the eyes. |
| Sclera | The white protective portion of the eye that contains collagen fibers. |
| Lens | Structure inside of the eye that refracts light to focus on the retina |
| Cornea | Clear portion of the outer layer of the eye that helps to refract light along with the lens |
| Choroid | Highly vascularized portion of the eye |
| Retina | Thin, light sensitive portion of the eye that processes light information and sends it down the optic nerve |
| Iris | Colored portion of the eye that acts as the eye's diaphragm, dilatating or constricting the pupil depending on the light intensity in the area |
| Ciliary Body | Contains the muscles of the eye that control the shape of the lens and the cells that produce the aqueous humor |
| Pupil | The eye's aperture; dark hole in eye that lets light through |
| Macula | Oval-shaped pigmented portion of the retina specialized for very clear vision (visual acuity) |
| Optic Nerve | Cranial Nerve II; transmits visual information from the retina to the brain |
| Optic Disc | "Blind Spot"; point of exit for axons leaving the eye |
| Tapetum Lucidum | Iridescent layer of tissue behind the retina that reflects light back through the retina; not found in human eyes |
| Anterior Chamber | Gap between the cornea and the iris that contains the aqueous humor |
| Posterior Chamber | Narrow gap between the iris and lens that plays an important role in producing and circulating the aqueous humor |
| Vitreous Body | Thick, clear, gelatinous fluid between the lens and the retina that gives the eye its shape |
| Aqueous Humor | Clear, watery, plasma-like fluid between the cornea and the iris that nourishes the cornea |
