Eye Anatomy

Superior Rectus One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; elevates the eye
Inferior Rectus One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; depresses the eye
Medial Rectus One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; adducts the eye
Lateral Rectus One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; abducts
Inferior Oblique One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; extorts, elevates, and abducts the eyes.
Superior Oblique One of the extraocular muscles of the eye; rotates, depresses, and abducts the eyes.
Sclera The white protective portion of the eye that contains collagen fibers.
Lens Structure inside of the eye that refracts light to focus on the retina
Cornea Clear portion of the outer layer of the eye that helps to refract light along with the lens
Choroid Highly vascularized portion of the eye
Retina Thin, light sensitive portion of the eye that processes light information and sends it down the optic nerve
Iris Colored portion of the eye that acts as the eye's diaphragm, dilatating or constricting the pupil depending on the light intensity in the area
Ciliary Body Contains the muscles of the eye that control the shape of the lens and the cells that produce the aqueous humor
Pupil The eye's aperture; dark hole in eye that lets light through
Macula Oval-shaped pigmented portion of the retina specialized for very clear vision (visual acuity)
Optic Nerve Cranial Nerve II; transmits visual information from the retina to the brain
Optic Disc "Blind Spot"; point of exit for axons leaving the eye
Tapetum Lucidum Iridescent layer of tissue behind the retina that reflects light back through the retina; not found in human eyes
Anterior Chamber Gap between the cornea and the iris that contains the aqueous humor
Posterior Chamber Narrow gap between the iris and lens that plays an important role in producing and circulating the aqueous humor
Vitreous Body Thick, clear, gelatinous fluid between the lens and the retina that gives the eye its shape
Aqueous Humor Clear, watery, plasma-like fluid between the cornea and the iris that nourishes the cornea
