Neuron Anatomy
For BIO 201 Lab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Body/Soma | The cell body of the neuron |
| Axon | Long slender projection of a neuron, where outgoing signals are sent |
| Dendrite | Branched projections that extend from the neurosoma that receive signals |
| Nucleus | Contains the DNA of the neuron, located within the soma |
| Myelin Sheath | Fatty sheaths around the axon that insulate the axon and speed up transmission |
| Schwann Cell | Glial cell in the PNS that creates the myelin sheath |
| Nodes of Ranvier | Gaps in the myelin sheath |
| Axon Hillock | Portion of the cell body that connects the soma to the axon |
| Nissl's Body | Granular structures that consists of the Rough ER |
| Neurilemma | Outer layer of the myelin sheath |
| Endoneurium | Connective tissue that covers the myelin sheath. |
| Synaptic Knob (terminal) | End of the axon that bulges out, releases synaptic vesicles that contain neurotransmitters that sends signals to other neurons or cells |
