Medical Terminology

Anatomical Position Standing straight up, feet together, arms at side, palms anterior
Supine lying face up
Prone Lying face down
Anterior situated toward the front
Posterior Situated toward the back
Medial Toward the midline
Lateral Away from the midline
Deep Closer to the core
Superficial closer to the surface
Distal further from the trunk of the body
Proximal Closer to the trunk of the body
Inferior below
Superior Above
Sagittal/Midsaggital Plane of motion that seperates the body into L and R
Frontal/Coronal Plane of motion that seperates the body into anterior and posterior
Transverse Plane of motion that seperates the body into superior and inferior
