Unit 5-2 vocabulary--cantley
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Extracellular Matrix | Molecules that fill the spaces between cells, consisting mostly of protein fiber networks. |
| Muscle Tissue | Contractile tissue consisting of filaments of actin and myosin , which slide past each other shortening cells. |
| Connective Tissue | Basic type of tissue that consists of cells within an extracellular matrix. Includes bone, cartilage, and blood. |
| Cardiac Muscle Tissue | Specialized muscle tissue found only in the heart. |
| Tendons | Cordlike or sand like mass of white fibrous connective tissue that connects a muscle to a bone. |
| Elastic Fibers | stretchy, yellow connective tissue fibers consisting of the protein elastin. |
| Bone | A hard, mineralized connective tissue that forms the bones of the skeleton. |
| Areolar Tissue | Connective tissue composed mostly mainly of fibers. |
| Ligaments | Cord or sheet of connective tissue binding two or more bones to a joint. |
| Osteocytes | Mature bone cell. |
| Blood | A connective tissue consisting of cells in a liquid matrix called plasma that circulate through the heart and vessels carrying substances throughout the body. |
| Neuron | Nerve cell. |
| Dense Connective Tissue | A connective tissue with many collagenous fibers, a fine network of elastin fibers, and sparse fibroblasts. |
| Skeletal Muscle Tissue | Type of voluntary muscle tissue attached to bone. |
| Elastic Cartilage | Opaque, flexible connective tissue with many elastic fibers. |
| Macrophages | Large phagocytic cells. |
| Mucous Membrane | Membrane that lines cavities and tubes that open to the outside of the body. |
| Nervous Tissue | Neurons and neuroglia. |
| Mast Cells | Cell to which, antibodies formed in response to allergens attach, bursting the cell and releasing allergy mediators, which cause symptoms. |
| Serous Membrane | Membrane that lines a cavity that does not open to the outside of the body. |
| Hyaline Cartilage | Semitransparent flexible connective tissue with an ultra-fine fiber matrix. |
| Synovial Membrane | Membrane that forms the inner lining of the capsule of a freely moving joint. |
| Cartilage | Type of connective tissue in which cells are in the lacunae separated by semisolid extracellular matrix. |
| Chondrocytes | A cartilage cell. |
| Neuroglia | Specialized cells of the nervous system that produce myelin, communicate between cells and produce an ionic environment. |
| Smooth Muscle Tissue | Type of involuntary muscle tissue found in digestive tract. |
| Fibroblasts | Cells that produce fibers in connective tissues. |
| Osteon | Cylinder- shaped unit containing bone cells that surround a central canal. Haversian system. |
| Cutaneous Membrane | Membrane pertaining to the skin. |
| Loose Connective Tissue | Includes areolar, adipose, and reticular connective tissue. |
| Collagen Fibers | White fiber consisting of the protein collagen, common in connective tissues, including bone matrix. |
| Reticular Fibers | Thin collagenous fiber. |
| Fibrocartilage | Strongest and most durable cartilage. Made up of cartilage cells and many collagen fibers. |
| Adipose Tissue. | Fat storing tissue. |
