| Wittenberg | A town in Germany where Martin Luther posted the 95 theses. |
| diet | Assembly of German princes, comes from the Middle English word meaning "a day for a meeting" |
| predestination | The idea that God had already determined who would gain salvation. |
| Geneva | Swiss city-state that Calvin led. |
| theocracy | Government run by church leaders. |
| Martin Luther | A German monk and theology professor who took action against the Church's corrupt activity. Wrote the 95 theses. |
| Charles V | The new Holy Roman emperor who declared Luther an outlaw when he refused to recant his theses. |
| John Calvin | Another reformer who shared Luther's beliefs and added on more. Published a book on how to run a Protestant church. |
