Government Vocab
| Government | System by which a country is organized |
| .Sovereignty | the right of a group of people to be free of outside interference |
| Legislative Branch | usually made up of people who are elected by the citizens of the country - main purpose is to create laws |
| Executive Branch | main purpose is to enforce, or carry out, the laws passed by the legislative branch |
| Judicial Branch | in charge of the courts in a country that settle disputes among citizens and the government; interpret and apply laws |
| Unitary Government | the central (national) government holds almost all the power |
| Confederation Government | local governments hold all the power |
| Federal Government | power is shared among different levels of government; central and local |
| Autocracy | A form of government where the ruler has absolute, or total power |
| Dictatorship | A form of government where one person controls the entire country |
| Absolute Monarchy | A form of government where the sovereign (monarch) has all the power |
| Head of Government | the person in charge of the day-to-day business of running the country |
| Oligarchy | A form of government where a political party or other small group makes all the major decisions |
| Democracy | A form of government where citizens have the power in choosing their leaders |
| Parliamentary Democracy | A form of government where citizens can vote for a representative from the political party that represents their views and the party with the most seats in parliament (legislature) picks the head of government |
| Head of State | a leader who does not have very much power |
| Constitutional Monarchy | A form of government that has a king or queen as its head of state; his/her powers are limited by the constitution |
| Presidential Democracy | A form of government where citizens elect the president as head of government separately from the legislature |
