Blood
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Plasma | the liquid part of the blood that contains many dissolved substances |
| Erythrocytes | the red blood cells that carry oxygen |
| Leukocytes | white blood cells that defend the body against bacteria, viruses and other invaders |
| Thrombocytes | cell fragments necessary for blood clotting; also called platelets |
| Hemoglobin | the iron-containing protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen |
| Anemia | reduced ability of the blood to carry oxygen due to a low number of rbc's or abnormal or deficient hemoglobin content |
| Leukemia | red bone marrow becomes cancerous and produces large numbers of abnormal white blood cells that do not function properly |
| Thrombus | a blood clot that forms in a blood vessel but does not move to another area of the body |
| Embolus | a blood clot that forms in a blood vessel and moves to another area of the body |
| Hemostasis | process of stopping blood flow |
