Blood

TermDefinition
Plasma the liquid part of the blood that contains many dissolved substances
Erythrocytes the red blood cells that carry oxygen
Leukocytes white blood cells that defend the body against bacteria, viruses and other invaders
Thrombocytes cell fragments necessary for blood clotting; also called platelets
Hemoglobin the iron-containing protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen
Anemia reduced ability of the blood to carry oxygen due to a low number of rbc's or abnormal or deficient hemoglobin content
Leukemia red bone marrow becomes cancerous and produces large numbers of abnormal white blood cells that do not function properly
Thrombus a blood clot that forms in a blood vessel but does not move to another area of the body
Embolus a blood clot that forms in a blood vessel and moves to another area of the body
Hemostasis process of stopping blood flow
