FCAT Vocab Review
Use this vocab list to review the reading skills that will help you ace the FCAT

conflict | the problem a character faces in the story |
climax | the “moment of truth,” the most exiting point of the story |
resolution | the end of the story that explains how the conflict is resolved |
characterization | how an author describes a character |
theme | the lesson the author wants you to learn from the story |
mood | the emotional feeling created by the setting of the story |
tone | the author’s attitude toward the topic of their writing |
fact | a statement that can be proven to be true |
opinion | someone’s belief about a topic that cannot be proven |
main idea | a statement that tells what the ENTIRE passage is about |
inference | a fact not directly told in the passage, but that you can put together by looking at the evidence |
cause | an event that causes other things to happen |
effect | an event that happens as the result of another event |
author’s purpose | the reason why the author wrote the passage |
context clues | words and phrases that help you guess the meaning of an unknown word |
