Term | Definition |
---|---|
Run-off Election | A special election whereby the top 2 candidates in a crowded election, go head to head to determine the winner. |
Caucus | A meeting of party members who nominate one of their own to run for office. |
Hard Money | Campaign donations that have strict laws on how they can be used by a candidate. |
Citizen Initiative | A method at the state level, where people can propose an idea for a law that will end up as a question on the ballot. |
19th Amendment | No one can be denied the right to vote based on gender. |
Electoral College | Article II of the Constitution states that the president shall be elected by "electors" appointed by each state. |
Recall Election | A special election whereby the voters are asked to remove a politician from office before their term is up. |
Primary Election | The spring election used to nominate the.strongest candidate from each party to square off in the fall election. |
Suffrage | The right to vote. |
Split Ticket | Voting for candidates on a ballot from multiple parties or independent candidates. |
Apathy | The most dangerous reason why more people do not vote. |
Absentee Ballot | AKA Early Voting, a method of casting a ballot which voters can utilize to vote on their own schedule. |
Straight Ticket | Voting for candidates on a ballot all from the same party. |
26th Amendment | Right to vote is extended to eighteen year olds. |
Indian Citizenship Act | 1924 Congressional law which gave Native Americans the right to vote. |
General Election | The November election that occurs every two years (during even years). |
Referendum | At the state level, a method whereby people can vote on getting rid of an existing state law. |
Plurality | Winner of an election does not have to get 50% + 1, just more than their opponents. |
Winner-Take-All System | In a presidential election, the winner of the popular vote in a state is entitled to that state's electoral votes. |
Party Base | The core members of a major party who will support their party no matter what. |
Soft Money | Campaign donations that are not regulated by law, and a candidate can spend that money in any way. |
15th Amendment | No one can be denied the right to vote because of race. |
Mid-Term Election | The November election that occurs two years after a presidential election (during even years). |
