| Term | Definition |

| Abduction | Movement away from the midline of the body |
| Adduction | Movement toward the midline of the body |
| inversion | Turning the sole of the foot inward |
| eversion | turning the sole of the foot outward |
| Elevation | raising a body part |
| Depression | lowering a body part |
| flexion | the movement of two body surfaces toward each other, as in the act of bending |
| extension | the straightening of a limb after it has been flexed |
| hypertension | the act of bending a joint or limb beyond normal extension |
| Dorsiflexion | movement of the sole of the foot upward (flexed towards the lower leg) |
| plantar flexion | motion of the plantar surface (sole of the foot) away from the body |
| Rotation | movement of a bone around its longitudinal axis, that is lengthwise |
| medial (internal) rotation | rotational movement towards (medially) the midline of the body |
| lateral (external) rotation | rotational movement away from the midline |
| Pronation | rational motion of the forearm in which the palm moves to face downwards |
| supination | rotational motion of the forearm in which the palm moves to face upward |
| circumduction | the circular movement at the far end of a limb; occurs in multiple planes |
| median (midsagittal) plane | Cuts the body into equal left and right planes. Top to bottom, vertical |
| Frontal (Cononal) Plane | divides the body on the side, dividing the body into a front and back portion |
| Transverse | Divides the body at the midline (waist) into upper and lower portions. |
| Medial | A reference point. Moving toward the midline of the body. |
| Lateral | Moving towards the side of the body. (away from the midline of the body.) |
| Anterior (ventral) | front portion of the body |
| Posterior (dorsal) | back portion of the body |
| superior (cephalic) | situated above another structure, toward the head |
| Inferior (caudal) | away from the head end or toward the lower part of a structure or the body; below |
