Orientation/Directional Terms & Body Planes

Superior Above
Inferior Below
Anterior/Ventral In front of
Posterior/Dorsal Behind
Medial On the inner side of
Lateral On the outer side of
Proximal Nearer the trunk (body) or to the point of attachment to the body
Distal Farther from the trunk (body) or to the point of attachment to the body
Superficial Toward/at the body surface
Deep Away from the body surface
Frontal (coronal) Plane Divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior)
Midsagittal (median) Plane Divides the body into left and right parts
Transverse Plane Divides the body into top and bottom parts
