What does the skins temperature regulation do? regulates body temperature and heat
What are three ways the skin uses temperature regulation? sweating by the sweat glands vascoconstriction by the arteries - skin turns paler vasodilation by arteries - skin turns red
What is cutaneous sensation? nerve receptors detect sensations allowing body to be aware
What is vitamin D synthesis? Why is it important? activates a series of chemical reactions allows for the absorption of calcium
What parts of the body have a 5th layer of skin, and what is it called? palms and soles of feet stratum lucidum
Which layers in the skin are alive and which are dead? top/seen layers are dead bottom/unseen layers are alive
Why does skin die? depends on the distance they are away from nutrients and the blood supply
Where are keratinocytes and what do they do? stratum granulosum and stratum corneum make the skin tough and waterproof
Where are melanocytes and what do they do? stratum base layer produce melanin
What are the 5 accessory organs of the dermis? sebaceous gland sweat gland nails hair arrector pili
Describe hair, and what it does produced by epithelial cells at the hair papilla insulate body temp and heat blocks dirt and sun
What is an arrector pili muscle and what does it do? make of skeletal muscle and under involuntary control wrinkles skin and makes hair stand up
What do sebaceous glands produce and what does this substance do? secretes oil prevents bacterial growth, helps waterproof skin and hair
What are the three types of burns, and how are they different first- superficial- heals in a week second- skin may get infection- heals in a couple weeks third- may be life threatening
What layer is damaged in a first degree burn? epidermis
What layer is damaged in a second degree burn? epidermis and dermis
What layer is damaged in a third degree burn? epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous
What are symptoms of a first degree burn? skin red and dry
What are symptoms of a second degree burn? pain swelling redness blistering
What are symptoms of a third degree burn? loss of skin blackened skin
Whats the difference between the three main types of skin cancer? basal cell carcinoma- most common squamous cell carcinoma- second most common melanoma- most dangerous
Which skin cancer is most dangerous and why? melanoma- most likely to spread because of close proximity to blood vessels
What cells do basal cell carcinoma affect? basal layer of the epidermis
What cells do squamous cell carcinoma affect? squamous cells above the basal layer
What cells do melanoma affect? all over the body out of control
