QuestionAnswer
What rays are used in X-rays? X-rays (short-wavelength electromagnetic waves)
What can you see on an X-ray image? dense structures like bones that appear as light areas and hollow structures and fat appear as dark areas
What is X-ray used for and not used for? -detecting broken bones - finding breast tumors (mammography) -measuring the density of bones (screening for osteoporosis) NOT USED FOR: most soft tissue problems
What are the cons of X-ray? -radiation exposure -images are two dimensional
What rays are used in Computed Tomography (CT) Scans? X-rays (because it is a computerized reconstruction of multiple X-ray images)
What can you see on a CT Scan? a detailed cross-sectional picture of scanned body regions
What is a CT Scan used and not used for? USED FOR: -images of bones -soft tissues -blood vessels LESS USEFUL FOR: -nervous tissue -joint structure
What are the cons of a CT Scan? more radiation exposure than an X-ray dangerous if done repeatedly
What rays are used in Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA)? What is required to make a DSA? X-rays requires an injection of an X-ray absorbing contrast agent digitally contrasts a before and after picture of the injection site to show blood vessels
What is DSA used for? USED FOR: -detecting blood vessel abnormalities such as blockages in the arteries
What are the cons of DSA? -time consuming -expensive -adverse reactions to the contrasting medium can occur
What rays are used in Positron Emission Tomography (PET SCANS)? Gamma rays that are emitted by radioactively tagged tracer molecules that are injected into the body *side note- sometimes glucose tracing rays are injected to find areas with high-metabolic activity and other molecules are used for other issues
What are PET Scans used for? USED FOR: -detecting the spread of cancer -monitoring the response to cancer treatment -used to help diagnose Alzheimer's disease -research brain function
What are the cons of PET Scans? -radiation exposure -poor image resolution
How do MRI's work? by use of powerful magnets and radio waves that image the location of hydrogen atoms in the body (mostly found in water)
What is a functional MRI (fMRI)? an MRI that tracks blood flow into various parts of the brain
What are the uses of an MRI? -imaging the brain images of spinal cord -images of nerves -detecting tumors - better quality images of SOFT tissues - fMRI allows you to see activity in the brain
What is an MRI not used for? bones(as they have low water content therefore no hydrogens)
What are the cons of MRI? -more expensive than CT scans -slower than CT scans -cannot be used in patients with most metal implants
How are Ultrasound images produced? high frequency sound waves reflect (echo) off the body's tissues
What are Ultrasounds used for? -developing fetuses (bc there is no radiation) -monitoring things in real time like blood flow -diagnosing abdominal or pelvic disorders -can detect atherosclerosis (thickening and hardening of the arterial walls detecting heart valve disorders
What are the cons of Ultrasound? -not useful for structures covered in bone (ex: brain) -not useful for air filled structures (ex: lungs) -images tend to be blurry/ low resolution
