Body Planes and Directions for Medical Terminology (9th grade)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| sagittal plane | divides the body in half between the eyes |
| midsagittal plane | divides the body in equal halves between the yees |
| frontal/coronal plane | divides the body into front and back sections |
| transverse plane | divides the body into superior and inferior sections |
| ventral | front of the body; belly side |
| dorsal | back of the body or spinal column |
| anterior | front of the body (when divided by the coronal/frontal plane) |
| posterior | back of the body (when divided by the coronal/frontal plane) |
| superior | upper part of the body (when divided by the transverse horizontal plane) |
| inferior | lower part of the body (when divided by the transverse/horizontal plane) |
| medial | closer to the midline when divided by the midsagittal plane |
| lateral | further away from the midline when the body is divided by the midsagittal plane |
| proximal | closer to torso closer to the point of attachment to the trunk of the body; used with appendages |
| distal | further away from torso further away from the point of attachment to the trunk of the body; ONLY USED WITH APPENDAGES (ARMS AND LEGS) |
| caudal | towards the tail (when divided by the transverse/horizontal plane) |
| cephalic | towards the head (when divided by the transverse/horizontal plane) |
| plantar | bottom of the foot |
| cephalic | towards the head |
| caudal | towards the tail |
| internal | inside the body |
| superficial | towards the surface |
| deep | towards the inside |
