Unit 1 (Enlightenment Thinkers)

What did Thomas Hobbes believe? Humans are inherently evil and they need a king to rule over.
What did John Locke believe? Humans were born with 3 rights (Life, Liberty, Property). The role of the government is to protect those rights.
What did Rousseau believe? Government is a social contract between people. If people were unhappy, the people are allowed to make a new government.
What did Montesquieu believe? Fears government tranny. If the government fringes on your natural rights the separation of powers were made (J, E, L).
What did Voltaire believe? Fears government oppressing via religion. Separation of church, freedom of speech, freedom of religion.
