Directional Terms

Anatomy

TermDefinition
Anterior toward the front of the body or body part.
Posterior toward the back of the body or body part.
Superior Above or uppermost part of the body structure.
Inferior Below or lowermost part of the body strucutre.
Medial toward or nearest the midline of the body.
Lateral Away from the midline of the body or to the side.
Proximal Nearest the attachment of an appendage or toward the trunk.
Distal Away from the point of attachment or away from the trunk.
Superficial At the surface.
Deep Below the surface or inward.
Parietal Pertains to the outer layer or wall.
Visceral Pertains to the covering of an organ.
Cranial Refers to the head.
Caudal Refers to the tail.
Inter In-between.
Intra- Inside.
Mid- In the middle.
Bilateral Symmetry Having mirror image halves.
