Sources of Power
Chapter 1: Where Does Political Power Come From?
| Term | Definition |

| Coercion | Power that comes from the ability or threat to punish |
| Rewards | Power that comes by using $, praise or material objects |
| Formal Authority | Power that comes from someone's title in an organization |
| Persuasion | Power that comes from the ability to influence people |
| Expertise | Power that comes from knowing more than other people |
| power | The ability to get people to do things they might not necessarily do |
| government | The ruling authority for a community (city, state, nation) |
| authority | The legal right to tell people what to do. |
| a school, park, or library | public goods |
| nation-state | a country that shares a common culture and borders |
| legitimacy | the acceptance of a leader or government as valid and legal |
| divine right theory | European monarchs were given the right to rule by God |
| mandate of heaven | Chinese concept that the emperor was the son of heaven, and thus, had the right to rule |
| revenue | taxes and fees that support the cost of government |
| horse trading | the political game whereby politicians bargain to try to get what they want |
| demolition derby | political game whereby to win you must totally destroy the opposition |
| walkout | political game whereby one side refuses to bargain until the other side gives in to their demands |
| social contract theory | idea that government should look out for peoples rights, in return, citizens agree to the laws |
