Directional Terms

HBS Directional Terms

Anterior front of the body
Posterior back of the body
Inferior lower on body, further from the head
Superior higher on body, closer to the head
Medial toward the midline of the body
Lateral away from the midline of the body
Distal farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
Proximal closer to the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
Superficial near the surface
Deep away from the surface
Ventral toward the belly
Dorsal toward the back
