Visceral Layer Inner layer of a cavity's membrane, often making up the surface of an organ itself
Parietal Layer Outer layer of a cavity's membrane
Cranial Cavity Dorsal body cavity that houses the brain
Vertebral Cavity Dorsal body cavity that encloses spinal cord
Meninges Membrane that lines the dorsal body cavities
Diaphragm Muscle that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities
Mediastinum Thick wall that divides the thoracic cavity, houses the heart and the great vessels, esophagus, trachea, bronchi, and the thymus
Pericardium Two-layered membrane that surrounds the heart
Visceral Pericardium Inner layer of the pericardium that forms the heart itself
Parietal Pericardium Outer layer of the pericardium
Pericardial Cavity Space in between the two pericardium layers
Pericardial fluid Fluid in the pericardial cavity that lubricates the two layers of the pericardium
Pleura Two-layered membrane that surrounds the lungs
Visceral Pleura Inner layer of the pleura that forms the lungs themselves
Parietal Pleura Outer layer of the pleura
Pleural cavity Space in between the two pleura layers
Pleural Fluid Fluid in the pleural cavity that lubricates the two layers of the pleura
Peritoneum Two-layered membrane contained in the abdominopelvic cavity
Visceral Peritoneum Inner layer of the peritoneum
Parietal Peritoneum Outer layer of the peritoneum
Mesentery Visceral peritoneum that anchors and suspends viscera
Serosa Visceral peritoneum that enfolds and covers the surface of organs
