| Physiology | the study of the functions of the cells, tissues, and organs of the body. |
| Anatomy | the study of the physical structure of the body and its organs. |
| Gross anatomy | refers to the study of those features that can be observed within the naked eye by inspection and dissection. |
| Microscopic anatomy | an area of study that deals with features that can be seen only with a microscope. |
| Regional | a branch of anatomy dealing with regions of the body especially with reference to diagnosis and treatment of diseases or injury. |
| Systemic | pertaining to a whole system. |
| Homeostasis | maintenance of a constant of static condition of internal environment. |
| Cell | structural and functional unit of all living organisms; sometimes called the building blocks of life. |
| Organelles | functional structures within the cytoplasm of a cell. |
| Tissues | a collection of similar cells and fibers forming a structure in the body. |
| Organs | a part of the body constructed of many types of tissues to preform a function. |
| Organ system | a biological system consisting of a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions. Each organ has a specialized role in a plant or animals body, and is made up of distinct tissues. |
| Organism | a living being that has a cellular structure and that can independently perform all physiologic functions necessary for life. |
| Anabolism | body utilizes the energy released by catabolism to synthesize complex molecules. |
| Catabolism | destructive metabolism involving the release of energy resulting in the breakdown of complex material within the organism. |
| Metabolism | the successive transformations to which a substance is subjected from the time it enters the body to the time it or its decomposition products are excerpted, and which nutrition is accomplished and energy and living substance are provided. |
| Responsiveness | the ability of an organism to adjust to changes in its internal and external environments. |
| Development | the advancement of abilities and knowledge. |
| Differentiation | describes the processes by which immature cells become mature cells with specific functions. |
| Growth | development, maturation, or expansion of physical structures or cognitive and psychosocial abilities. |
| Reproduction | the act or process of reproducing. |
