| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| ribosome | a minute particle consisting of RNA and associated proteins found in large numbers in the cytoplasm of living cells. |
| golgi apparatus | organelle that helps process and package proteins and lipid molecules, especially proteins destined to be exported from the cell |
| lysosomes | a membrane-bound cell organelle that contains digestive enzymes |
| proteasomes | protein complexes which degrade unneeded or damaged proteins by proteolysis (breaks peptide bonds) |
| peroxisomes | membrane-bound organelle found in the cytoplasm of virtually all eukaryotic cells |
| mitochondria | membrane-bound cell organelle that generates most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell's biochemical reactions (ATP) |
| endoplasmic reticulum | the transportation system of the eukaryotic cell, and has many other important functions such as protein folding. It is a type of organelle made up of two subunits – rough endoplasmic reticulum, and smooth endoplasmic reticulum |
| nucleus | positively charged central core of an atom |
| cytoskeleton | structure that helps cells maintain their shape and internal organization, and it also provides mechanical support that enables cells to carry out essential functions like division and movement |
| cytoplasm | gelatinous liquid that fills the inside of a cell |
| centrosome | cellular structure involved in the process of cell division |
