What is pH? | pH stands for the power of hydrogen and determines how acidic or alkaline a solution is by measuring the concentration of hydrogen ions. |
Describe the function and structure of a mitochondria. | A tiny membranous capsule surrounding an inner membrane that is embedded with enzymes. Each mitochondrion contains a DNA molecule that allows it to produce enzymes and replicate itself. Produces energy for cells. |
What is the function the to Golgi apparatus? | It is made of a stack of cistern and is surrounded by vesicles that aid to break down carbohydrates and combine it with protein to produce globules of glycoprotein. |
What is the epidermis and its components? | The epidermis is the thinner layer of the skin made of keratinized stratified sqamous cells that also includes hairs, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands. |
What is the dermis and its components? | The dermis is the thicker layer made of fibrous tissue and also includes blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, muscles and nerves. |
What is the stratum granulosum and its function? | It is keratohyalin granule-filled cells that form a leakproof barrier of two to four layers. |
How do bones offer protection? | Bones offer protection to fragile organs by forming a hard bony box around organs like the brain, lungs, and heart. |
What are the four muscles of the abdominal wall that work together to protect and hold the viscera in place? | External and internal obliques, transverses abdomens, and rectus abdominis. |
What is the prime mover of inspiration? | The diaphragm. As the diaphragm flattens, the size and volume within the thoracic cavity increases, allowing inspiration to occur. |
What are unipennate muscles? | Unipennate, like the soles, have fascicles that anchor to only one side of connective tissue shaft. |
What are bipinnate muscles? | Bipennate muscles, like rectus femoris, have double feathered attachment of fascicles. |
What are multipennate muscles? | Multipennate, like the deltoid, have numerous interconnecting quill-like fascicles converge on a common point of attachment. |
Describe antagonist muscles | Muscles that, when contracting, directly oppose prime movers. |
