Medical Record Terms Related to Disease

Acute Sharp; intense symptoms with a short course
Chronic Condition persisting over a long time period
Diagnosis Determination of presence of a disease
Etiology Cause of Disease
Exacerbation Increase in severity of a disease with aggravated symptoms
Remission A period during which signs and symptoms stop or abate
Febrile Elevated temperature
Idiopathic Condition w/o clearly identified cause
Localized Limited to a definite area
Systemic Relating to the whole body
Malaise Feeling of being unwell
Marked Significant
Morbidity Sick; A state of disease
Morbidity Rate The number of cases of a disease in a given year; ratio of sick to well in a population
Mortality State of being subject to death
Mortality Rate Death Rate; ratio of # of deaths to total # in a given population
Prognosis Prediction of the likely outcome of a disease
Prophylaxis A process or measure used to prevent disease
Progressive The advance of a condition as signs and symptoms increase in severity
Recurrent To occur again
Sign A mark; objective evidence of disesase that can be seen or verified
Symptom Occurrence; Subjective evidence of disease that is perceived by the patient
Syndrome A running together; combination of symptoms and signs indicating a particular condition or disease
Noncontributory Not involved in bring on the condition or result
Unremarkable Not significant or worthy of noting
