integumentary system or skin has been called both a membrane, b/c it covers the body, and an organ, because it contains several kinds of tissue
epidermis the outermost layer of skin
dermis this layer has a framework of elastic connective tissue and contains blood vessel,lymphvessels,nerves,involuntary muscle,sweat and oil glands, and hair follicles.
subcutaneous fascia the innermost layer.it is made of elastic and fibrous connective tissue and adipose(fatty) tissue and connects the skin to underly muscles.
sudoriferous glands (sweet gland) are coiled tubes that extend through the dermis and open on the surface of the skin at pores.
sebaceous glands are oil glands that usually open onto hair follicles
dilate enlarge or expand to make bigger
alopecia baldness
constrict to contact or narrow tomake larger
albino a person with an absence of color pigmentsskin has a pinkish tint and the hair is pale yellow or white
erythema is a reddish color of the skin that can causedby either burnsor a congestion of blood in the vessel
jaundice a yellow discoloration of thr skin can indicate bile in the blood as a result of liver or gallbladder disease
cyanosis is a blush discoloration of the skin caused by insufficient oxygen
macules flat spots on the skin such as freckles
papules firm raised areas such as pimples and the eruptions seen in some stages of chicken pox and syphilis
vesicles blisters or fluidfilled sacs such as those seen in chicken pox
pustules pus-filled sacs such as those seen in acne or pimples
crusts areas of dried pus and blood commonly callled "scabs"
wheals itchy elevated areas with an irregular shape hives and insect bites are examples
ulcer a deep loss of skin surface that may extend into the dermis may cause periodic bleeding and the formation of scars
