What are hollow calorie foods? foods that have high calorie count,but not much nutrition
what is Digestion? combination of chemical and mechanical process's involved in the breakdown of food.
what is a Enzyme? organic substance that stimulates chemical reactions/digestion
what is absorption? movement of nutrients into the blood stream
what is metabolism? how food is used after digestion and absorption in the production of energy
what is BMR( basal metabolic rate)? amount of energy required to maintain vital function at rest
what us a calorie? amount of heat/energy produced by food
what is an essential nutrient? nutrients that are NOT manufactured by body. must get from food
what is a registered dietician? Has a bachelor degree in food and nutrition science and completed a dietetic internship and passed a licensing exam thru the American Dietetic Association
what is dietetics? application of nutrition science to individuals
What qualifies a food substance as a nutrient? supplies heat and energy , builds and repairs tissues, maintains cell activities
Which two nutrients provides most of your body's heat and energy? cards and fats
Which nutrient is the primary source of energy? Fats
Which nutrients are responsible for most of your body's build and repair? proteins
Which nutrients are necessary for metabolic reactions to proceed normally? Vitamins and minerals
List some general characteristics of malnutrition? decreased resistance to disease and infection, slowed growth and development(kids), unintentional weight loss
which groups of people are naturally more prone to malnutrition? elderly, children and teens
where does most nutrient absorption take place? small intestine
where does water absorption take place? large intestine
Know the formula to calculate BMR & minimum calorie requirements. Look at BMR handout
what might cause someones minimum calorie requirements to vary? activity level, body size, age, gender
be able to find someones BMI. What us the healthy range? 19-24 on hand out
