| INSPIRATION | Breathing in; AKA INHALING |
| EXPIRATION | EXPULSION of air from LUNGS |
| RESPIRATORY CYCLE | INSPIRATION followed by EXPIRATION |
| VITAL CAPACITY | the MAXIMUM amount of air a person can EXHALE after taking the deepest breath POSSIBLE |
| HEMOGLOBIN | Oxygen carrying pigment in RED BLOOD CELLS |
| NASAL CAVITY | Space WITHIN nose |
| SINUSES | Cavity/space in a BONE or other party part |
| PHARYNX | Portion of the DIGESTIVE TUBE posterior to the ORAL and NASAL cavities, as well as larynx |
| LARYNX | structure between the PHARYNX and TRACHEA that houses the VOCAL CORDS |
| TRACHEA | TUBULAR ORGAN that leads from the LARYNX to the BRONCHI |
| BRONCHUS | branch of the TRACHEA that leads to the LUNGS |
| BRONCHI | small branch of the BRONCHUS within the LUNGS |
| ALVEOLI | AIR SAC of the LUNGS |
| LUNGS | MAIN ORGAN of the respiratory system, where GAS EXCHANGE takes place |
| RESPIRATORY CENTER | area of the MEDULLA that acts with the centers in the pons to REGULATE rate, rhythm, and depths of breathing |
| EPIGLOTTIS | FLAP LIKE, Cartilaginous structure located at the BACK of the TONGUE near the ENTRANCE of the TRACHEA |
| DIAPHRAGM | SHEETLIKE structure largely composed of SKELETAL MUSCLE and CONNECTIVE TISSUE that SEPARATES the THORATIC and ABDOMINAL CAVITIES |
| COUGHING | Taking a deep breath IN, closing the glottis, and forcing air upwards TOWARDS the CLOSED STRUCTURE |
| SNEEZING | Similiar to coughing, clears UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACTS |
| LAUGHING | taking a breath and releasing it in SHORT EXPIRATION |
| HICCUP | sudden INSPIRATION due to SPASMODIC CONTRACTION of the DIAPHRAGM while glottis is CLOSED |
| YAWNING | deep breath is taken |
| SPEECH | Air is FORCED through the LARYNX, vocal cords VIBRATE, words are formed by lips, tongue and soft palate |
| BRONCHITIS | INFLAMMATION of the BRONCHI |
| HYPERVENTILATION | ABNORMALLY deep and prolonged BREATHING |
| SINUSITIS | INFLAMMATION of the NASAL sinuses |
| TRACHEOTOMY | INCISION/CUT into the TRACHEA for the purpose of respiring the air flow to the lungs |
| EMPHYSEMA | HYPERINFLATION (enlargement) of the AIR SACS with destruction to ALVEOLAR WALLS; destroys lung tissue, causes shortness of breath |
