| Lateral | Toward the side; away from the midsagittal plane. |

| Homeostasis | Stability, balance, or equilibrium within a cell or the body. |
| Hypothalamus | Controls body temperature, thirst, hunger, and other homeostatic systems. |
| Oxytocin | Hormone released from the pituitary gland that causes increased contractions of the uterus during labor. |
| Set Point | Range of normal; normal reading. |
| Atoms | Smallest unit of matter that forms a chemical element. |
| Isotope | Elements that contain the same number of protons, but different number of neurons. |
| Ionic Bond | A chemical bond formed by a transfer of electrons from one atom to another. |
| Covalent Bond | A chemical bond formes when chemicals share one or more of their electrons. |
| Metabolism | All chemical reactions that occur in the body. |
| Electrolytes | Acids, bases, and salts that dissociate in a solution to form ions. |
| Lipids | Water insoluble organic biomolecules. |
| Axial Skeleton | Consists of the cranium, spine, and ribs. Serves to protect the central nervous system. |
| Appendicular Skeleton | Consists of bones of limbs. Includes pectoral and pelvic girdles. |
