Term | Definition |

Transverse plane | A plane that divides the body into top and bottom portions |
Anatomical position | A standard position in which the body stands erect, feet are slightly apart with the palms facing forward and thumbs point away from body |
Anaerobic respiration | A process of catabolic biological reactions which occur in the absence of oxygen, yielding lactic acid as a by-product |
Homeostasis | A condition in which the body's internal environment remains constant despite changes in the external environment |
Cell wall | A structural wall found outside the cell membrane of some organisms |
Sarcoplasmic reticulum | A specialized form of the endoplasmic reticulum that is found in cardiac and skeletal muscle cells |
Skeletal muscle | Striated, multicellular tissue which is responsible for voluntary movement of the body |
Melanocytes | Specialized cells of the epithelium that produce a pigment called melanin |
Sutures | Immovable, fibrous joints that are only found in the skull, which normally fuse in the first 2 years of life |
Red bone marrow | A substance found in the long bones of the body that have hematopoietic function |
