comedo clinical term for pimple; local elevation of the skin arising from a minor infection of sebaceous glands
contusion clinical term for bruise; a discoloration and swelling of the skin resulting from tissue damage to the blood vessels of the dermis or deeper tissues
cyanosis blue tinge of color to an area of the skin and is a sign of cardiovascular or respiratory disturbance
cyst a closed sac or pouch on the surface of the skin that is filled with liquid or semisolid material
edema clinical term for fluid accumulation in a confined space; caused by leakage of fluid across capillary walls. common sign of injury and infection
erythema greek word that means "blush"; any redness of the skin
fissure clinical term for a narrow break or slit in the skin
furuncle, boil the local swelling on the skin from an abscess associated with a hair follicle
induration local hard area on the skin or elsewhere in the body
jaundice clinical term for an abnormal yellow coloration of the skin and eyes
keloid an overgrowth of scar tissue that forms an elevated lesion on the skin
laceration the common result of an injury caused by a tear or perhaps a cut by a sharp object with an irregular surface
macule a discolored flat spot on the skin surface, such as a freckle; Latin for "little spot"
nevus similar to a macule but darker in color; a pigmented spot commonly called a mole
pallor abnormally pale color of the skin
papule general term describing any small, solid elevation on the skin
petechiae small red or purple dots; abnormal rupture of small blood vessels in the dermis
pruritus the symptom of itchy skin
purpura a symptom of purple-red skin discoloration, usually the result of a hemorrhage (one or more broken blood vessels) that spread blood through the skin
pustule general term for an elevated area of the skin filled with pus
ulcer an erosion through the skin or mucous membrane; Latin for "a sore"
decubitus a common form of ulcer arises from lack of movement when lying supine for an extended period of time; bed sore
urticaria common allergic reaction to meds, foods, infection, or injury producing small fluid-like skin elevations
wart sign of infection by a papillomavirus; verruca; an effort by the skin to rid itself of the virus and is observed as a skin elevation with thickened epidermis
vesicle small elevation of the epidermis that is filled with fluid containing little or no pus
wheal temporary, itchy elevation of the skin, often with a white center and red perimeter; symptom of an allergic reaction of the skin

acne bacterial infection of sebaceous glands and ducts
actinic keratosis precancerous condition of the skin caused by exposure to sunlight. forms skin lesions resulting from overgrowths of the epidermis, usually with scaly surfaces
albinism genetic condition characterized by the reduction of the pigment melanin in the skin
alopecia loss or lack of scalp hair, baldness
male-pattern baldness result of a genetically controlled factor that prevents the development of hair follicles in certain areas of the scalp
burn an injury to the skin caused by excessive exposure to fire, electricity, chemicals or sunlight
total body surface area (TBSA) extent of injury caused by the burn is determined by the amount of the surface area damaged and the depth of the damage
carbuncle skin infection composed of a cluster of furuncles or boils; hot pain associated with this disease
Basal Cell Carcinoma less dangerous, more common form of skin cancer; tumors arising from epidermis usually remaining localized
Squamous Cell Carcinoma a dangerous form of skin cancer; tumors arise from epidermis usually remain localized
cellulitis an inflammation of the connective tissue in the dermis; bacterial; caused by an infection that spreads from the skin surface or hair follicles to the dermis and sometimes the subcutaneous tissue
folliculitis inflammation of little follicles
dermatitis generalized inflammation of the skin involving edema
contact dermitis caused by physical contact with a triggering substance such as poison ivy
seborrheic dermatitis an inherited form characterized by excessive sebum production
actinic dermatitis caused by sunlight exposure
Eczema superficial form of dermatitis and may also be called atopic dermatitis; chronic pruritis and deep scaliness
ecchymosis a condition of the skin caused by leaking blood vessels in the dermis, producing purplish patches of purpura that are larger in size than petechiae
herpes a viral skin eruption producing clusters of deep blisters; caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV)
oral herpes caused by herpes type 1
genital herpes caused by herpes type 2
hyperhidrosis condition of excessive sweat; may be caused by a nervous disorder, low blood sugar or a thyroid disease
impetigo a contagious skin infection similar to oral herpes, usually forms around the lips. characterized by the presence of golden crusts following the rupture of vesicles. "scabby eruption"
kaposi sarcoma form of skin cancer arising from the connective tissue of the dermis; brown or purple patches on the skin appears among some elderly patients. also a common condition with HIV/AIDS
leukoderma as some people age, their skin becomes lighter in color due to reduced activity of the pigment-producing cells in the skin, the melanocytes
malignant melanoma arises from melanocytes; means black tumor; once established in the skin, the tumor grows rapidly and metastasizes, 1/2 of cases arise from nevi (moles)
onychopathy disease of the nail
onchyocryptosis a condition when a nail becomes buried in the skin due to abnormal growth; ingrown nail
onychomalacia nails are abnormally soft; could be a result of calcium or vitamin D deficiency or a fungul infection
onychomycosis a fungal infection of one or more nails
paronychia an infection around the nail; condition of alongside the nail
pediculosis parasitic body lice, scalp is head lice, pubic region is pubic lice and other parts of the body is body lice
psoriasis a painful, chronic disease of the skin characterized by the presence of red lesions covered with silvery epidermal scales
scabies a skin eruption caused by the female itch mite, burrows into the skin to extract blood
scleroderma an abnormal thickening or hardness of the skin caused by overproduction of collagen in the dermis
systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) a chronic, progressive disease of connective tissue in many organs including the skin; marked by red patches on the skin of the face and joint pain
tinea a fungal infection of the skin; ringworm
tinea capitis forms on the scalp and can lead to alopecia
tinea pedis forms on the feet; athletes foot
tinea corporis occurs elsewhere on the body
trichopathy a general term for a disease affecting the hair
xeroderma abnormally dry skin; caused by hyposecretion (

dermatoplasty general term for a surgical procedure of the skin
emollient a chemical agent that softens or smooths skin
retinoids they cause the upper layers of the epidermis to slough away
ultraviolet light therapy used to manage for of acne, causes the upper layers of your skin to shed
plastic surgery popular form of skin treatment that is used for skin repair following a major injury, correction of
rhytidoplasty surgical repair of skin wrinkles
liposuction the removal of subcutaneous fat by insertion of a device that applies a vacuum to pull the fat tissue out of the body
