AP MUSCLES

QuestionAnswer
the ability of skeletal muscle to shorten with force contractility
the capacity of skeletal muscle to respond to a stimulus excitability
the ability to be stretched extensibility
ability to recoil to their original resting length after they have been stretched elasticity
muscles help to produce heat essential for maintenance of normal body temp. true
the connective tissue sheath that each skeletal muscle is surrounded by epimysium
a connective tissue located outside the epimysium/ it surrounds and separates muscles fascia
a muscle composed of numerous visible bundles fasciculi/ fascicle
fasciculi are surrounded by a loose connective tissue called the perimysium
the fasciculi are composed of single muscle cells called fibers
each muscle fiber is a single cylindrical cell containing several... nuclei
each fiber is surrounded by a connective tissue sheath called the endomysium
myofibrils consist of 2 major kinds of protein fibers actin myofilaments myosin myofilaments
thin myofilaments. they resemble 2 minute strands of pearls twisted together actin myofilaments
thick myofilaments. they resemble bundles of minute golf clubs myosin myofilaments
highly ordered units formed by actin & myosin filaments sarcomeres
the basic structural and functional unit of the muscle sarcomeres
each sarcomere extends from one _______ to another z line (disc)
Each z line is an attachment site for ... actin
the arrangement of these things give a band appearances actin & myosin
the darker band that extends the length of the myosin A band
the light area which consist only of myosin H zone
what are the myosin myofilaments are anchored by a staining band called the M line
outside of the cell membranes compared to the inside. positively charged
the inside of the cell membrane is negatively charged
the charge difference across the membrane is called the resting membrane potential
stimulation of the muscle cell creates a change in cgarecteristic
the brief reversal back of the charge is called action potential
nerve cells that carry action potentials to skeletal muscle fibers Motor Neurons
axons enter the muscle and branch. each branch that connects to a muscle Neuromuscular junction; or synapse if its near the center of the cell
single motor neuron and all the skeletal muscle fibers it innervates are called Motor unit
an enlarged nerve terminal resting in an indentation of the muscle cell membrane neuromuscular junction
the enlarged nerve terminal is called the Presynaptic Terminal
the space between the presynaptic terminal and the muscle cell is the __________ & the muscle fiber is ___________ synaptic cleft ; Postsynaptic terminal
each terminal contains ________ that secrete a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine
acetylcholine released into the synaptic cleft between the neuron and muscle cell is rapidly broken down by an enzyme acetylcholinesterase

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
