Embryology: fetal period

QuestionAnswer
Give an overview of the fetal period -begins at week 9 and ends at birth -characterized by rapid growth of tissues and organs and maturation (most organs have been made, now just growing fast)
define crown-rump length (CRL) ultrasound measurement that is used during pregnancy. The baby is measured, in centimeters, from the top of their head (crown) to the bottom of their buttocks (rump).1 The limbs and yolk sac are not included
Break up the fetal period into four major time periods -9-12 -13-16 -17-20 -21-38
Describe CRL change across the more major time periods -9-12 9cm -13-16 14cm -17-20 19cm -21-38 36cm
What major events occur during major time period 9-12 systems develop further, reproductive organs begin, coordination occurs, permanent kidney develops, palate (roof of mouth) develops
What major events occur during major time period 13-17 rapid body growth, bone ossification continues, limbs proportionate to body length, skull&brain cont to enlarge
What major events occur during major time period 17-20 more muscle use and strength, lanugo and vernix caseosa cover skin, limbs near final proportions, brain and skull cont. to enlarge
What major events occur during major time period 21-38 major weight gain, subcutaneous fat deposits, eyebrows and eyelashes appear, eyelids open, testes descend into scrotum, blood cells form in marrow only
average measurements of new born CRL: 36cm total length: 53cm weight: 2.4-4.5 kg
