Body Section and Body Planes
| Term | Definition |

| Sagittal Plane | Any lengthwise plane running from front to back and top to bottom, dividing the body or any of its parts into right and left sides. |
| Sagittal Section | A flat cut made along a sagittal plane |
| Midsagittal section (or median sagittal section) | A sagittal section made in the exact midline of the body, resulting in equal and symmetrical right and left halves. |
| Coronal Plane (or frontal plane) | Any lengthwise plane running from side to side and top to bottom, dividing the body or any of its parts into anterior and posterior portions. |
| Transverse Plane (or horizontal plane) | Any crosswise plane that divides the body or any of its parts into upper and lower parts. |
| Cross-section | A cut along a plane parallel with the short axis of an organ. |
| Longitudinal Section | A cut along the long axis of an organ. |
| Cross-Section | If you cut the tip of your finger off it is what sort of cut section? |
| Longitudinal Section | If you split your finger down the middle from the finger tip to the hand it is what sort of cut section? |
| Oblique Section | A diagonal (no a right angle) cut of the body. |
