Respiratory pathology terms.

Hyperventilation the condition of taking abnormally fast, deep breaths
Cheyne-Stokes Respirations an abnormal pattern of breathing characterized by periods of apnea followed by deep rapid breathing
Aspiration Breathing fluid, food, vomitus, or an object into the lungs
Atelectasis incomplete expansion of alveoli
Epistaxis bleeding from the nose
Hemoptysis bloody sputum
Bronchospasm a contraction of the smooth muscle in the walls of the bronchi and bronchioles that tighten and squeeze the airway
Laryngitis inflammation of the larynx, or voice box
Hypoxia Low oxygen saturation of the body, not enough oxygen to tissues.
Hypoxemia deficient oxygen in the blood
Apnea cessation of breathing
Bradypnea an abnormally slow rate of respiration usually of less than 10 breaths per minute
Dyspnea difficult or labored breathing
Eupnea normal breathing
Orthopnea difficulty breathing when lying down
Tachypnea Increased breathing rate
Pharyngitis inflammation of the pharynx
Rhinitis inflammation of the nasal mucosa
Rhinorrhea Clear nasal discharge, "runny nose"
Sinusitis Infection/inflammation of the nasal sinuses
CF cystic fibrosis
COPD chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
PE pulmonary embolism
SOB shortness of breath
TB tuberculosis
URI upper respiratory infection
COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) A group of lung diseases that block airflow and make it difficult to breathe. Usually associated with smoking.
upper respiratory infection (URI) infection of the nasal cavity, pharynx, or larynx (commonly called a cold)
Laryngospasm Spasmodic contraction of the larynx. Sometimes associated with acid reflux.
hemothorax blood in the pleural cavity
ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) respiratory failure in an adult
pulmonary edema fluid in the air sacs and bronchioles
pulmonary embolism Blocking of a pulmonary artery due to a blood clot
hospital acquired pneumonia A type of pneumonia contracted during a stay in the hospital when a patient's defenses are impaired. AKA nosocomial pneumonia.
interstitial lung disease refers to a group of almost 200 disorders that cause inflammation and scarring of the alveoli and their supporting structures
expectoration the act of coughing up and spitting out saliva, mucus, or other body fluid
anoxia the absence of oxygen from the body's tissues and organs even though there is an adequate flow of blood
asphyxiation any interruption of normal breathing resulting in asphyxia; also known as suffocation
hypoxia deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues
