Central Nervous System
| Term | Definition |

| Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) | A cushion of fluid both around the organs and within them. |
| Ventricles | The four large, fluid-filled spaces within the brain. |
| Spinal Cord Tracts | Provide conduction paths to and from the brain. |
| Medulla Oblongata | An enlarged extension of the spinal cord located just above the foramen magnum. |
| Pons | Composed, like the medulla, of white matter and reticular formation. |
| Midbrain | Forms the midsection of the brain, because it lies above the pons and below the cerebrum. |
| Cerebellum | Little brain; Second largest part of the brain. |
| Arbor Vitae | The internal white matter of the cerebellum; "Tree of Life" |
| Thalamus | A dumbbell-shaped mass of gray matter made up of many nuclei. |
| Hypothalamus | Small but functionally important area of the brain; It performs many functions of the greatest importance both for survival and for the enjoyment of life. |
