Constitution: Constitutional Convention

| George Washington | elected as commander of the Continental Army; elected president of the Constitutional Convention |
| Thomas Jefferson | wrote the Declaration of Independence |

| Articles of Confederation | first attempt at a national government; written at the Second Continental Congress; very weak and did not work |
| Shay's Rebellion | former soldiers who came back as farmers after the war, rebelled against the courts who were taking away their farms |

| James Madison | nicknamed the "Father of the Constitution" and who also proposed the Virginia Plan |
