latitude | Lines that run horizontally east to west around the globe; parallels |
Longitude | Lines that run vertically north to south around the globe; meridians |
Fossil Fuels | fuel formed in the Earth from plant or animal remains; coal, oil, and natural gas |
Parliamentary Democracy | type of democratic government where citizens elects MPs who choose a Prime Minister as chief executive; the head of the government is a member of the legislature |
Head of Government | Handles the Day to Day operations of the country. Makes decisions for the country. |
Head of State | Represents the country as a spokesperson or figurehead |
Legislature | the law making body of government. May go by various names. Examples: Congress, parliament, National Assembly, ETC. |
Presidential Democracy | type of democratic government where citizens elects members of the legislature and also the chief executive, known as the president; the head of government is NOT a member of the legislature |
Genocide | Deliberate extermination of a racial or cultural group |
Cold War | the power struggle between the Soviet Union and the United States after World War II. Period of distrust with no actual war between US and USSR |
German Reunification | Occurs after the fall of the Berlin wall. The reintegration of West and East Germany into a single nation in 1990. |
Communism | a system that usually has a strong central government that makes all decisions for the country. Leans heavily towards a command economy. Few rights for citizens. |
Propaganda | information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. |
Geography | the study of the physical features of the earth |
Environmental Issues | Problems with the earth's systems caused by humans, air water and soil |
Culture | he habits, beliefs, and traditions of a group of people |
Manufacturing | the making of goods in a large amount |
Climate | weather conditions that are typical for a specific region |
Nuclear Power | Power created using the heat produced when atoms are split |
Equator | a line of latitude which runs horizontally at 0 degrees; dividing the Earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres. |
