Mitosis Phases

Phases of Mitosis

TermDefinition
Prophase Phase 1 - Chromosomes condense, consisting of two chromatids held together by a centromere. Membrane around nucleus breaks down
Metaphase Phase 2 - Chromosomes line up in the middle of the celland centomeres are the same distance from each side of the cell.
Anaphase Phase 3 - Chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite sides of the cell. Each side of the cell has a complete set of chromosomes.
Telophase Phase 4 - A new nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromosomes, forming two identical nuclei. Cytokinesis begins during this phase.
Chromatid one of two identical halves of a replicated chromosome.
Centromere a specialized structure on the chromosome, appearing during cell division that holds two chromatids together.
