Mitosis Phases
Phases of Mitosis
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Prophase | Phase 1 - Chromosomes condense, consisting of two chromatids held together by a centromere. Membrane around nucleus breaks down |
| Metaphase | Phase 2 - Chromosomes line up in the middle of the celland centomeres are the same distance from each side of the cell. |
| Anaphase | Phase 3 - Chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite sides of the cell. Each side of the cell has a complete set of chromosomes. |
| Telophase | Phase 4 - A new nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromosomes, forming two identical nuclei. Cytokinesis begins during this phase. |
| Chromatid | one of two identical halves of a replicated chromosome. |
| Centromere | a specialized structure on the chromosome, appearing during cell division that holds two chromatids together. |
