What is anatomy? The branch of biology that deals with the structure and parts of organisms
What word was anatomy derived from? The Greek word “temnein” meaning “to cut”
Types of anatomy Gross Microscopic Developmental
Macroscopic anatomy is also called what? Gross anatomy
Microscopic anatomy is also called what? Histology
What is gross anatomy? The study of structures that can be seen with the naked eyes
What is Microscopic anatomy? The study of cells and tissues using a microscope
What is cytology? The study of cells
What are the approaches for studying anatomy? Regional Systemic Surface
Which anatomy study approach involves studying each body region separately? Regional approach
Which anatomy study approach deals with study each body system one by one regardless of what region they are in? Systemic approach
What is the disadvantage of regional study approach? It does not show the continuity of the function of the organs into other regions.
What is the disadvantage of systemic approach? It might be difficult when dissecting the body for details.
Which anatomy study approach deals with the stuff the internal structures as they relate to the underlying skin? Surface approach
What is the anatomical position? The standard reference position of the body that is used to describe the location of structures.
What are the characteristics of the head in the anatomical position? Face looking forward Eyes are open and looking at something at a distance The rim of the bone under the eyes in on the same horizontal plane as the top of the ear opening Mouth is closed and facial expression is neutral.
What are the characteristics of the limbs in the anatomical position? Body standing upright and feet together The toes point forward Hands by the side Palms facing forward with fingers straight and together The pad of the thumb is turned 90 degrees to the pad of the fingers.
What are anatomical planes? Planes that pass through the body in anatomical position.
What is the plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior? Coronal plane
What plane divides the body into left and right? Sagittal plane?
Which sagittal plane divides the body into two equal parts? Median Sagittal plane
Which plane divides the body into superior and inferior parts? Transverse or Horizontal or Axial plane
