| autocracy | single ruler with unlimited power; citizens have no role |
| parliamentary democracy | citizens elect MPs, who in turn elect the Prime Minister, as chief executive. Is a member of legislature. |
| presidential democracy | citizens elect members of legislature and chief executive (the president). Not a member of legislature. |
| dictator | ruler with absolute power and authority |
| fascism | total power is given to a dictator; no individual freedoms |
| figurehead | this person represents the country but does not have many duties in the government |
| monarchy | government headed by a king or queen; it is hereditary |
| Prime Minister | executive leader of a parliamentary democracy; elected by legislature |
| president | executive leader of a presidential democracy; elected by citizens |
| Head of Government | handles the day to day operations of a country; makes decisions for a country |
| chancellor | executive leader of a parliamentary democracy; elected by the legislature |
| Head of State | represents the country as a spokesperson or figurehead |
| chief executive | heads the military, enforces laws, keeps country running from day to day |
| Parliament | name of legislature in a parliamentary democracy |
