QuestionAnswer
what is checks and balances? parts of the government have authority over some. to make sure no one branch would be able to control too much power,
what is separation of powers? the federal government is divided amongst 3 different branches that operate independently
what is an example of checks and balances? a president can veto (turn away or deny) any law, but 2/3 of congress can OVERRIDE that veto
what is an example of separation of powers? congress has the power to create laws, the President has the power to veto them, and the Supreme Court may declare laws unconstitutional.
what is federalism? a government in which power is divided between state and national levels
what is an example of federalism? there is one strong main government for the entire United States that has a lot of power and the individual states don't have much power.
