The Great Famine

QuestionAnswer
When was the Great Famine? Between 1845 - 1850.
Why did the famine happen? Potato blight, rise in population, subdivision, dependence on the potato, poverty, diseases and cottiers worked for rent and not for money.
What is potato blight? A fungus that spreads in damp and humid weather and destroys the potatoes.
What is eviction? When people get kicked out of their homes.
Why were the ships used to emigrate called “coffin ships”? Many people died no board of illness or starvation.
What were public work schemes? People had to build roads, piers, etc. And the they would get food from the government.
Which British prime minister got maize for the starving. Sir Robert Peel, in November 1845.
What is a workhouse? A large building where people worked in return for basic accommodation and food.
Who first set up soup kitchens? The Quakers.
