A&P Vocab #4 - Lesson 3.2 The Integumentary System and 3.3 (first part)

TermDefinition
dermis The second layer of skin which includes blood vessels, nerves, and various structures including, but not limited to sweat glands and hair follicles.
epidermal dendritic cells Specialized cells associated with the immune and nervous systems and respond to the presence of bacteria or viruses.
epidermis The first layer of skin which has multiple layers of keratin cells which vary in viability from deep to superficial.
hypodermis Also known as the subcutaneous fascia, this layer of primarily adipose tissue and fibrous connective tissue is found below the dermis.
integumentary system The body system which includes the skin and its appendages (nails and hair),
keratin A tough protein found in the skin, hair and nails that helps provide structure to the integumentary system.
keratinocytes, Cells which are mostly found in the epidermis that produce keratin, the tough fiber found in skin, hair, and nails.
melanin A pigment that protects the body from ultraviolet rays from the Sun.
melanocytes Specialized cells in the skin which produce melanin.
Merkel cells These cells are located in the stratum basale which function as touch receptors.
papillary layer The outer layer of the dermis.
reticular layer Located below the papillary layer.
sebaceous glands Located all over the body EXCEPT for the palms of the hands and soles of the feet which produce an oily substance called sebum.
sebum Oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands. It is most composed of triglycerides and fatty acids.
stratum basale The basement layer of keratinocytes which are the most viable and which provide nutrients to the non-viable keratinocytes. It also contain melanocytes.
stratum corneum The superficial layer of keratinized cells that we normal refer to as "the skin".
stratum granulosum The layer of skin that has small granules in it.
stratum lucidum, The layer of skin only found on the soles of the feet and the palms of the hand.
stratum spinosum This layer is found in in between the stratum basale and the stratum granulosum.
sudoriferous glands The medical term for "sweat glands", which are found throughout the dermis of the body and especially in the underarms, soles of the feet, and palms.
