cardiac muscle Also known as the "myocardium", this muscle type will only be found in the walls of the heart.
cartilage Part of the skeleton, this organic material is found at the ends of the bones and in-between bones. It provides support, flexibility and minimizes friction,
chondroblasts Also known as the perichondral cells, these cells help in the formation of cartilage. They are located in the perichondrium, which is a layer of connective tissue that surrounds developing bone and also helps protect cartilage.
compressive strength The ability to withstand compression.
connective tissue Found throughout the body with multiple functions, not limited to body/organ structure and protection, maintaining proper shape of the organs, and a rigid framework that helps muscles move.
elasticity The ability to stretch when tension is applied and being able to go back to its initial shape after being stretched.
endocrine gland A gland that secretes its product into the interstitial space within the body.
epithelial tissue Includes the epithelia and glands, that cover the body and line the cavities of the body.
exocrine gland A gland that secretes its product to the outside of a body. Example - sweat glands would be considered "exocrine" glands.
glands Epithelial cells that are organized to produce and secrete substances.
histology The study of tissues
lumen Means hollow inside portion of something like a gland, blood vessel, or lymphatic vessel.
muscle tissue It allows our body to move and allows us to generate force on command.
nerve tissue This is a class of tissue which has the unique ability to convey information by way of electrical signals.
neurons The nervous system cells that generate, transmit, and receive electrical signals
osseous tissue Commonly known as bone tissue which has osteoclast cells (break down bone matrix) and osteoblast cells (build bone matrix)
reticular connective tissue Contains reticular fibers and is found in the bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen.
skeletal muscle The most common muscle in the body, it pulls bone to make us move and it has striations.
smooth muscle Found in the walls of hollow organs, blood vessels, airways, gastrointestinal tract, bladder, and uterus.
tensile strength When a material resists breaking under tension
