| abortion | the termination of pregnancy; spontaneous or induced |
| alpha-fetoprotein screening (AFP) | a blood test during pregnancy to detect birth defects. |
| amniocentesis | the use of a needle to withdraw amniotic fluid from the amniotic sac |
| amniotic | pertaining to the amniotic fluid within the amniotic membrane surround the fetus. |
| anteflexed | abnormal bending forward |
| anteverted | a forward placement |
| areola | a ring-like coloration about the nipple of the breast |
| Bartholin's glands | two small mucous glands, situated one on each side of the vaginal opening at the base of the labia minora |
| benign hypertrophy | nonmalignant enlargement |
| bulbourethral glands | two small glands, one on each side of the prostate gland, terminating the urethra by way of a duct |
| cervix | the entrance into the uterus |
| cesarean | surgical removal of an infant from the uterus |
| chlamydia | a sexually transmitted disease cause by a bacteria that lives as an intracellular parasite |
| circumcision | surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis |
| clitoris | an erectile organ located at the anterior junction of the labia minora |
| coitus | sexual intercourse between a man and a woman |
| colposcopy | a diagnostic examination to visualize the cervix through a colposcope |
| conceive | to become pregnant; the uniting of the sperm and ovum |
| conception | the union of the sperm of a male and the egg of a female; fertilization |
| contraception | against conception |
| contraction | the muscle action of the uterus during labor |
| corpus luteum | the yellow body that develops in the ruptured graafian follicle after the ovum has been discharged |
| cryptorchidism | failure of the testicle to descend into the scrotum |
| dilation and curettage | dilation of the cervix and scraping of the interior lining of the uterus |
| dysmenorrhea | painful menstruation |
| dysplasia | precancerous cells; within the cervix, these cells are precursors to cervical cancer |
| ectopic | in an abnormal position; in pregnancy refers to the embryo or fetus being outside the uterus |
| effacement | the thinning out of the cervix during labor |
| ejaculation | the expulsion of seminal fluid from the male urethra |
| ejaculatory duct | the duct from the seminal vesicle to the urethra |
| embryo | the first eight weeks of development after fertilization. |
| endometrium | the mucous membrane lining of the uterus |
| epididymis | a convoluted tube resting on the surface of the testicle that carries sperm from the testicle to the vasdeferens |
| episiotomy | an incision in the perineum to avoid tearing during childbirth |
| erectile | refers to tissue that is capable of erection, usually caused by vasocongestion |
| erectile dysfunction | (primary) never had an erection; (secondary) currently unable to sustain erection |
| fallopian tubes | the oviduct; the passageway for the ova from the ovary to the uterus |
| fertilization | impregnation of the ovum by the sperm; conception |
| fetus | an embryo after eight weeks of gestation |
| fibroid | a tumor made up of fibrous and muscular tissue |
| foreskin | loose skin covering the end of the penis |
| gamete | a germ cell; any reproductive body |
| genital herpes | fluid-filled lesion on the external genitalia, with are contagious upon direct contact. |
| genitalia | the external sexual organs |
| gonorrhea | a venereal disease of the reproductive organs, which is highly contagious upon direct contact. |
| graafian follicle | the vesicle in which ova are matured and that releases them when ripened. |
| gynecology | the study of diseases of the female, particularly of the organs of reproduction |
| hydrocele | the accumulation of fluid in the scrotum |
| hymen | a membranous fold partially or completely covering the vaginal opening |
| hysterectomy | surgical removal of the uterus |
| hysteroscopy | a procedure using the hysteroscope to view the endometrium of the uterus |
| impotence | inability of a male to obtain or maintain an erection |
| inguinal canal | a passageway in the groin for the spermatic cord in the male |
| inguinal hernia | the presence of small intestine in the inguinal canal |
| interventional hysterosalpingography | a diagnostic examination to evaluate the fallopian tubes |
| labia majora | the two large folds of adipose tissue lying on each side of the vulva of the female; external genitalia |
| labia minora | the two mucocutaneous folds of membrane within the labia majora |
| ligation | to tie off; the process of binding or tying |
| mammary glands | the breasts |
| mammogram | an X-ray of the breast |
| mastectomy | surgical removal of a breast |
| menarche | the first menstrual period |
| menopause | the permanent cessation of menstruation |
| menorrhagia | excessive menstrual flow, hemorrhage |
| menstruation | periodic discharge of bloody fluid from the uterus |
| moniliasis | an infection of the mucous membranes by yeast-like fungi |
| mons pubis | a pad of fatty tissue and coarse skin overlying the symphysis pubis in the female |
| myometrium | the muscular structure of the uterus |
| nonspecific urethritis | inflammation of the urethra in males and vaginitis or cervicitis in females cause by bacteria or an allergy to substances used by a sexual partner |
| os | pertains to a mouth or opening |
| ovulation | the periodic ripening and rupture of a mature Graafian follicle and the discharge of the ovum |
| ovum | an egg, the female gamete or reproductive cell |
| Papanicolaou (PAP) smear | a test to detect cancer cells in the mucus of an organ |
| penis | the male external sex organ |
| perineum | the region between the vagina and anus of the female and the scrotum and anus of the male |
| phimosis | a narrowing of the opening of the foreskin of the penis |
| placenta | the structure through which the fetus obtains nourishment during pregnancy the afterbirth |
| pregnancy | the condition of being with child |
| prolapse | dropping of an internal part of the body; usually refers to uterus or rectum |
| prostate | a gland of the male reproductive system that surrounds the proximal portion of the urethra |
| prostatectomy | excision of part or all of the prostate gland |
| rectocele | the protrusion of the posterior vaginal wall and anterior wall of the rectum through the vagina |
| reproductive | concerning reproduction |
| retroflexed | refers to the body of the uterus being bent backward. |
| retroverted | refers to the entire uterus being tilted backward. |
| salpingo-oophorectomy | surgical excision of the ovary and fallopian tube |
| scrotum | the double pouch containing the testes and part of the spermatic cord. |
| semen | the mixture of secretions from the various glands and organs of the reproductive system of the male, which is expelled at orgasm. |
| sperm | the male gamete or sex cell |
| spermatozoan | a sperm cell |
| syphilis | a communicable venereal disease spread by sexual contact |
| transurethral | through the urethra |
| trichomoniasis | infestation with parasitic protozoa; usually refers to vaginal involvement |
| trimester | divided into three sections; the third segment or period. |
| uterus | a muscular, hollow, pear-shaped organ of the female reproductive tract in which a fertilized ovum develops into a baby. |
| vagina | a musculomembranous tube that forms the passageway from the uterus to the exterior |
| vaginitis | inflammation of the vagina |
| vas deferens | the excretory duct of the testes |
| vasectomy | the cutting out of a portion of the vas deferens |
| vulva | the female external genitalia, including the clitoris, the labia minors and labia majora. |
| womb | nonmedical name for the uterus |
| zygote | a cell produced by the union of an ovum and a sperm |
