What two organs make up the CNS? The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord.
What is a dermatome? An area of skin in which sensory nerves derive from a single spinal nerve root
Name the receptors associated with pain, touch, pressure, and stretch responses. Pain - nociceptors; Touch - mechanoreceptors; Pressure - baroreceptors; Stretch -mechanoreceptors
Name some of the different general types of nonsteroid hormones. Protein hormones, Peptide hormones, Amino acid derivative hormones
Explain the negative feedback loop that controls erythropoiesis. Erythropoiesis is regulated through a long-range negative feedback loop, whereby tissue hypoxia stimulates erythropoietin (Epo) secretion, which promotes an increase in erythropoietic rate.
State the primary principle of circulation. Heart provides the pressure for circulation. Blood flows from the heart to the periphery and then via the veins back to the heart only because of the pressure gradient.
What is the origin of lymph? Lymph originates as interstitial fluid. As blood flows through the capillaries in the body tissues, blood plasma is filtered out and enters areas between the cells of the tissues, becoming interstitial fluid.
What is the role of macrophages in the defense of the body? Macrophages work as innate immune cells through phagocytosis and sterilization of foreign substances such as bacteria, and play a central role in defending the host from infection.Dec 29, 2017
What is an antigen? Any substance that causes the body to make an immune response against that substance. Antigens include toxins, chemicals, bacteria, viruses, or other substances that come from outside the body.
What are the three main divisions of the pharynx? The nasopharynx, the oropharynx, and the laryngopharynx
