TermDefinition
ileum the third portion of the small intestine between the jejunum and the cecum
JEJUNUM the middle part of the small intestine
RECTUM the final section of the large intestine, ending at the anus
CECUM a pouch connected to the junction of the small and large intestine
SIGMOID COLON the S- shaped last part of the large intestine leading into the rectum
ESOPHAGUS the part of the alimentary canal that connects the throat to the stomach
SMALL INTESTINE the part of the intestine that runs between the stomach and the large intestine
LARGE INTESTINE the cecum, colon, and rectum collectively
PANCREAS A large gland behind the stomach which secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum
ABSORBTION the movement of nutrients, water, and electrolytes from the lumen of the small intestine into the cell, then into the blood.
