Lymphatic systems

Here is what I learned from the lymphatic system explained in 5 minutes video.

Term/Question/Statement Answer
Lymphatic Vessels Absorb excess interstitial fluid and transport lymph to ducts that drain into veins.
Lymph nodes and lymphoid tissues in the thymus, spleen and tonsils produce Lymphocytes which are WBC involved with immunity.
The functions of the lymphatic system include Transporting interstitial fluid, transport absorbed fat from small intestines into the blood and through the use of lymphocytes provide immunological defense against disease causing agents.
Lymphatic Capillaries are The smallest vessels of the lymphatic system, close ended tubes, and form vast networks in most of the organs in the body.
Walls of lymphatic capillaries are Composed of endothelial cells with porous junctions so interstitial fluid, proteins, white blood cells, microorganisms and absorbed fat can easily enter.
Once fluid enters the lymphatic capillary it becomes Lymph
Lymph capillaries merge, and the lymph contained is carried into larger lymphatic vessels known as Lymph ducts
Lymph duct walls are Similar to structure of vein walls with 3 layers and valves to prevent backflow.
Fluid movement within lymph ducts occur as a result of peristaltic waves of contraction
The smooth muscle within the lymph ducts contains a pacemaker that initiates action potentials associated with the entry of CA^2+ which stimulates contraction.
The activity of the pacemakers and peristaltic waves of contraction are increased in response to Stretching of the vessel.
Lymph ducts eventually empty into either the Thoracic duct or the right lymphatic duct.
The thoracic duct and the right lymphatic duct drain lymph into the Left and right subclavian veins.
Interstitial fluid is formed by filtration of plasma out of blood capillaries.
Once the ducts drain into the subclavian veins, Interstitial fluid is returned back into the cardiovascular system.
Before interstitial fluid is returned into the cardiovascular system, they are filtered by Lymph nodes
Lymph nodes contain Phagocytic cells that help remove pathogens and germinal centers, which are sites of lymphocytic production.
The lymphoid organs are The tonsils, thymus and spleen.
Lymphoid organs contain germinal centers and serve as sites of lymphocyte production.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
